Ride along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal towpath from Harper‘s Ferry, W.Va. to Washington DC and back. Rain would take the fun out of this ride so a final decision to cancel or ride will be made on Friday, June 2. You you reserve lodging before that make sure you can cancel with no penalty. Harper‘s Ferry is 215 miles and a three and a half hour drive from Princeton. It’s located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, where the states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet. The plan is to arrive on your own Sunday night, ride to and from Washington along the Potomac River and Monday, Stay over and return home Tuesday, although anyone who wants to make the long drive home after the ride is welcome to do so. There are several options for lodging including motels and airbnbs. We will be there before school is out and at the tail end of a weekend which should mean plentiful and inexpensive deals. We will be starting at 8 am and with stops along the way should be back by 8 pm, with darkness as our deadline. Waiting around for cyclists who are not physically up to the challenge is not an option, so make sure you are in shape for the ride before signing up and make sure you have a bicycle that works well on gavel trails like the D&R Cabal towpath. There will be a couple miles of asphalt and traffic as we make a loop around the National Mall. Because mechanical breakdowns are always a possibility when bicycling and one that can’t be fixed along the way would be a big problem when we are far from home with a darkness deadline, I’m hoping a non bicycling spouse of friend would be willing to join us, hang out in the very cool town of Harper‘s Ferry (it’s also a national park and popular tourist destination) and be available to drive up to 62 miles to retrieve any bike (and rider) that can’t complete the trip. The sooner you sign up the better chance you have of finding someone to carpool and or lodge with.

Note that registration here is NOT registration for the ride; see the link for that. However, registration here will allow other members to know you are registered. This 1 week ride will commence on July 8, 2023 with all events concluding on July 15, 2023. When you register, your commitment is to pledge to donate or raise $ for Anchor House. We are asking those cyclists that will be riding 500 miles to raise $750. The Ride for Runaways is an annual, 7-day, 500-mile charity bicycle ride that exists to support Anchor House. In 1979, a group of concerned citizens founded Anchor House, a shelter for runaway and/or abused teenagers. The Anchor House founders used the analogy of a ship to keep it safe in the storm to visualize the mission of the agency. The anchor is supported by links of its chain, which in turn keep the anchor tied to the ship. The founders understood that life‘s circumstances can cause the links of a family‘s chain to break down. They created Anchor House as a stabilizing place for runaway, homeless, and abused youth. Today, Anchor House has grown into with programs that meet the needs of, teens and young adults. Visit the Anchor House site to learn more about Anchor House and it‘s programs. Many of your questions can be answered by looking on the website, however if at any time you have a question you can’t find an answer for, please don’t hesitate to email Kathy Drulis at kdrulis@anchorhousenj.org. We hope that The Ride for Runaways will continue as an annual event with nearly 200 bicyclists and over 30 support volunteers participating. Our riders represent all walks of life and all ability levels. Applications are available, on their website, for the coming summer‘s ride.

The 9th annual Spellbound Century is an annual charity ride organized by TNT Cycling out of Mt. Holly, NJ. The event attracts about 1,200 cyclists. --Rides for all levels and abilities - 20/45/63/100 mile routes. Routes are mostly flat. --RWGPS maps & SAG support will be provided. --After-ride refreshments & entertainment will be available. The event sells out early, however the organizers promise PFW’ers can register after the official cutoff. If you‘re interested in riding with fellow PFW‘ers I have set up a group called Princeton Freewheelers Group. Our group is set up for a metric century, but on the day of the ride you can choose any distance and we can divide up into different groups as needed. The fee is $55 (includes a $5 discount for PFW). To sign up, follow the link below. After you chose your T-shirt size (included in the fee) click ‘Join a Team‘ and select ‘Princeton Freewheelers Group‘. Note that registration here is NOT registration for the ride; see the link for that. However, registration here will allow other members to know you are registered. The Cabot Trail Tour will start in Baddeck, Cape Breton, the head of the Bras D‘or Lakes, the 3rd largest salt water lake system in North America. It is a fitting beginning to start the Lippincott TOUR as it reflects and revisits the English and Celtic Family Roots of many North Americans with a visit to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum on Day 1. We are very proud that Alexander Graham Bell loved Cape Breton so much he made it his Summer Home- you know - he invented the telephone - what else did he invent???
